Winch Rope
« on: October 10, 2005, 16:47:10 »
I was thinking of replacing my metal winch wire, with synthetic, for both safety and ease of use. I've just spoke to Lifting and Crane, and they do a flat "webbing" which I seen mentioned on here, and read in LRO.

The standard line comes with a hook one end, and nothing the other end. However they seemed abit surprised when I wanted a sheath to cover the first few turns to protect it from the heat of the drum, and secondly I wanted a fastner on the end to attach to my winch drum. I'd basically like a crimp on connector that screws to the drum. I realise it doesn't take any strain, but just holds the rope while the first few turns go onto the drum. Should these be easy to do on a synthetic rope. Or am I best getting one that is already fitted?

Oh and what sort of sheath should I be using?

Well From what i have Heard Not Seen? They are Safe to use! And if it does Snap It will just drop on the ground as oppsed to Whipping back! As for Webbing that must be a nightmare reeling in if it starts to overlap and intertwine? I think that if i could afford it ? I would go Plasma Instead of Steel Which i have already! Or Webbing!
And when its time for me to get new rope it will be plasma!

im not wanting to step on any toes but please remember that "plasma" is imported into this country by andy T of rufftraks scotland, sadly as it is so good it has become generaic like hoover that all synthetic winch wire be tagged plasma, personally i think his is the best but mainly because i was winching with him IE ont end of rope & was thoughrly impressed,

FWIW he fits a lightweight rock gard to his lines as standard i think BUT for an extra £15 i think he will supply you a heavy duty sheeth for the winch to go through, this also doubles as a winch sail & is in BRIGHT orange to show that there is a line there

I must admit I'd prefer to see the webbing before making a decision or maybe here from somebdy that is using it first hand.

I'm guessing when you say Plasma you actually mean any of the decent branded synthetic ropes??

Above all the other things mentioned about Plasma......

It floats..... Comes in handy that does.

Dunno about webbing. Sometimes the winch line will start to spin. I can't see webbing being happy with that. especially if not going straight on to the drum (at an angle)

From what I've read it had all the benefits, with the only negative possibly not been round hence easier to knot etc.

And it's about a third to a quarter the price.

pretty much but the reason i said the above about the plasma is when people are breaking/melting there "plasma" when in actual fact its say dyneema its doin more harm than good the way the term is banded about.

in regards to the webbing it would appear to be a good idea & also you can get more on but never seen it in action,

P.S did you know that synthetic winch rope shouldn't be wound on the drum neatly as this can cause it to pull down through the top layers & hook up

Just bought 120 feet of plasma 12 rope (brand new) off ebay for £66 plus £5 postage and it came with eye for winch and the hook.

Its Dyname 12 (the stuff scorpion sells)

Keep your eyes peeled, you can get it on there cheap!!!!!

when i went to the LRO show at Drifield i was looking at the webbing and thought it seemed a very good idea and talking to the guy at Cranes and Lifting he said it would be o.k regardind overheating on the drum due to the way the webbing is made and this, that and the other and it's heat discipation characteristics.
Was thinking about buying some ready for the Whaddon weekend so i will watch this space with interest!!!!

I don't suppose the guy at L&C mentioned what sort of breaking strain it is?

No worries, I'll probably give them a call, at £40 all in except the crimped fastner I'll probably go for it, if its good for atleast twice my winch. So I'm looking for 20,000lbs idealy.

30 quid gets you the 100ft rope, with standard safety hook on the end. The girl on the phone didn't think the other end had a crimp on, and wasn't sure about a sheath. And I forgot to ask about breaking strain   but it does include shipping.

It's only 4.8 tonne, which when you consider the winch is 11000lbs, I would consider not enough. Maybe I'm been overly cautious.

Anybody care to comment, looks like I stay with the current steel cable for abit long then as I don't really want to spend a couple of hundred quid on plasma right now.

Dave.

Hi All,
Interesting topic - this!!!
I also spotted the "webbing" type winch line while at Billing this year.
I poked, prodded asked all sorts of questions and at the end of the exercise came to the following conclusions.
1. The breaking strain is about the same as the wire cable, original equipment fitted to most winches - 8mm wire about 4.8 tons.
2. Ease of handling - vastly superior to wire, similar to synthetic lines.
3. Visible drawbacks - Fitting to the drum, Use of a snatch block, unknown, Range of end fittings, hook etc, limited.
4. No permanant repairs possible?
5. Price - superb value for money!

So in summary, if you use your winch occasional, not competatively and bear in mind the fact it is unlikely that it can be used with a snatch, it is a good deal and worth a £30 gamble.
About the same price as a replacement wire line.

Is 8mm Wire Cable only got a breaking strain of 4.8 Ton?? (Roughly)

That surprises me, as that would make that the weakest link on my winch a T-Max 11,000lbs, I would have expect some safety margin.

Hi,
A T- Max 11,000 does not use 8mm Wire, I think it comes with 9.2mm (3/8") wire as originally fitted.

That explains it then, I knew I should have gone and measuer it before I posted

Mind mine is also fitted with the extra protective coating of mud, so is probably near 12mm  :D

Can I take advantage of your superior(sp?) knowledge and ask if you've any idea what the breaking strain for 9.2mm Wire is, so that I know what sort of replacement I should be looking for when I do change to synthetic?
