Land Cruiser model range?

A chap I met in Gambia had driven all round Africa in a Land Cruiser.  His was around 1989 vintage and had a 4L or 4.2L (I forget which) naturally aspirated diesel.  It was a hard top with a flared bonnet, and had 24v electronics.

What model would this have been?  I've had a scout around but the range is quite confusing to the uninitiated.  Was it an FJ?  How do I work out which series?

Would have been a 60 series.

Had a Google around and it doesn't look like most of the pics that are coming up under 60 series.  I think it's one of these - is this a 60 series?

Basically they use a series number and engine code to derive the model. FJ40 is F series petrol engine 40 series swb, FJ45 is same but LWB etc etc.

I recently changed from a 1995 300tdi Disco to a 1990 LJ73 Land Cruiser.

Having lots of fun now without having to spend loads of money every time the Disco breaks...

 What is an LJ73? Is that an import only vehicle with removable roof or the "Landcruiser 2" that Toyota sold over here?

Does it have leaking sunroofs or a camper conversion?

UK model known as the LC 2.

Short wheel base, 3 door affair.

Standard still at present, and too small to sleep in!  May have to go roof tent if I undertake another adventure. Considering ferry crossing to Norway and keep driving North until I run out of land...  Should be well into the Arctic Circle by then...

Already have a free suspension lift to fit when I get around to it.  Still getting used to it all at the mo so won't rush to make any changes too quickly.

How are you and Sally?  Did James get better?

We are good thanks, James has recovered.

Still got the 90, threaten to sell it often but then I put the soft top back on for the summer and I remember why I like it.

Sounds cool.  Would have been nice to have of the FRP topped LCs.  Whip off the hard top for the Summer...

I'm interested to know too.  South East Africa was pretty much swarming with LWB versions of the pic I posted (75 model I think), with a 4.2 NA diesel.  But although I've kept my eyes open I've not seen any around in the UK at all.  Shame really as they seem a cracking truck and the Africans only had good things to say about them.  The ride was pretty good too, for a leafer.

I haven't got to Norway yet...

I am planning another adventure for 2010.  I originally wanted to go to Iceland again but Smyril have cancelled the ferry until further notice.  I may attempt to cross to Norway and keep going North, maybe crossing to Sweden and Finland...

I will keep you posted!

First step is to to get a bigger truck as my LJ70 is too short to sleep in.  Mind you, I took it to Wales in January with the Land Cruiser Owners Club and slept in it for one night...  Couldn't do more than a couple of nights though, and definitely only room for one!
