Propshaft daft question...
« on: July 05, 2008, 11:30:47 »
When fitting the propshafts, should the spline be at the axle end or gearbox end? Or does it even matter?

Gearbox end

Much higher up, and far less likely to get mashed on something!

Hi,

I don't think it really matters but as the previous postie says higher is better, helps keep it out of harms way and mud :D

That's the way I was thinking  :D

Now discovered an issue though......
The rear prop, when fully compressed, is only 1/4" shorter than it needs to be when installed. When the axle is dropped down it doesn't compress any more, but I don't know whether it will bottom out when the axle moves up. I'll have to drop the springs out to find out.

The front prop has plenty of space.

I suspect the engine mounting brackets on the new Richards chassis are not in the right place  Measuring as best I can against the old chassis, they seem to be about 1/4" further back. This would mean the rear prop is nearer full compression and the front more extended.

I've shifted the engine/gearbox as far forwards as the bracket slots allow, but it still doesn't really leave much compression available on the rear prop shaft.

I'm going to move the rear axle as far back as I can. I'll take up any slack in the A-frame bolt holes on the chassis, but it won't make much differance, if any at all.

Update.....
Just popped the rear springs out and jacked the rear axle to full bump travel. The engine/gearbox is being pushed forwards by about 1/4" or maybe even 1/2". The rear prop shaft is bottoming out. Surely this can't be right?

Are there different rear shaft lengths? this one is in a 2.5TD with an LT77 gearbox. Could it be the R380 uses a longer shaft and it's one of those I have?

I've just measured this one at full compression and it's 645mm over the flanges. Has anyone got one lying about they could measure up for me?

Frustration is setting in rapidly!

Exactly my concern. If anyone has an earlier rear prop they can measure the compressed length on, it would be most helpful.

I'm now beginning the think they had a front prop shaft fitted to the back and something completely wrong in the front!!

IIRC, it's the front shafts that tend to have a spline gaiter fitted? This one was on the rear shaft.
