300 tdi not starting!
« on: May 22, 2010, 17:19:11 »
I have park the discovery up for 2 weeks whilst I fixed the wheel bearing and a few other problems. Previously to parking it up had a real problem starting it up after not being used all day.

Came to start it this morning, and it wont start! makes all the right noises etc but still nothing.
I changed the glow plugs this afternoon and still nothing.
I'm thinking there is a fuel issue, as there is nothing coming out of the metal hose which i disconnected from the injector?

Is this a common problem? can anyone shed any light on this for me?

Thanks Matt
If it still workx, why fix it??!!

possibly the lift pump is leaking fuel back to the tank so there's no fuel in the lines present, you wont be able to prime it manually with the lever either when it needs replacing.

Could be a weak lift pump, or it could be not getting power to the start solenoid on the injector pump.... try disconnecting the fuel line after the lift pump, if you have fuekl there, then could be solenoid.... or, it could also be the alarm spier not sending live current to the start solenoid to open up and let fuel into the injector pump......
gone from 200tdi.... to 300tdi... still with loads done to it, in fact, even more than the last truck...LOL!!!

Turn the ignition on,remove the wire to the pump and reattach it,if it clicks then its ok,if it dont then then the solanoid is stuffed. You can take the solanoid out ,remove the inner and bolt back on.It will start like this but you will have to stall it to stop it. By the sound of what you have said i doute this is the problem thou  :-k :-k :-k :-k :-k :-k

You'd only see a pinhead of fuel from the injector pipe when it's cranking.  Have you checked the wiring on the glowplugs or if they have a voltage at the connector?

Won't be the glow plugs, they wont stop tdi starting in this country unless in dire winter temperature.

odd, I'm just going on experience of few 300tdi and a couple 200tdi's that I have relationships with. I drew conclusions from 300tdi's that I've had that the majority of them are driving around with the glow plugs burnt out looooong time ago and owners are non the wiser - dash light glows and relay timer clicks all the same with them working or not.

I've got voltage at the glow plugs and the fuel solenoid.

I've check to see where there is fuel and found that there's nothing at the lift pump in or out! There's fuel there in the line as I got a mouth full  lol. Are the pumps expensive if this is the problem?

My sister's just needs a couple of them working to start but with none it flattens the battery before the engine will catch.  It's probably got something to do with the compressionj pressure at cranking speed, I know hers has one cylinder with slightly higher pressure because I measured the piston projection when I did the head.

Thanks to everyone who helped diagnose my fault.
A new lift pump has fixed! £19 well spent.
