A bit late, but the greatest living Lancastrian received an MBE in the New Years Honours list for 'Services To Broadcasting And Heritage'

A well deserved honour, not going to someone who's lined his own pockets by kicking a ball (for example).

Anyone see his new programme last night when he started to build his own winding gear & Shaft in his (simply wonderful) garden.

He once offered to take parties of schoolchildren around it, but the local education commitees asked about Health & Safety issues, ie; guards on machines.
He is alleged to have replied along the lines that
"Any of 'em would take you bloody arm off, if you're bloody daft enough to put it in them!"
Sadly, a valuble contribution to industrial technology for children was missed.

He's only doing one show this year - 19th July at the Theatre Royal, Nottingham - looks like its about 2/3rds sold by the tickets I got.  :D

Taking the father-in-law as our fathers day presents!

Chris, you'll love it.
I saw him last year at the 'City Varieties' in Leeds ('The Good Old Days' theatre)
He was in fine fettle, and was on stage for almost 3hours.

It is true he has Cancer, but there's another TV series coming soon on traction engines, ploughing engines, rollers etc... as far as I understand
(if I understand his article in the June issue of 'Old Glory' correctly)

And the mineshaft is still under debate with the Council, but he's got lots of local (& other important) support.

That man is an absolute star. Saw a small part of one of his programmes where he was on with the mine shaft. Pure brilliance. I want that mans back garden. HSE compliant or otherwise. He's a landy driver too. Series motor of some description, 2 or 2a I think. There was an article about it's re-build in one of the mags a while back. My father in law could well be his long lost brother. They share some very worrying qualities.
Cheers, Karl..

Richard,

He picked his MBE up this morning - had the traction engine and caravan with him at Buckingham Palace - my brother-in-law (on Queens Guard duty) had a good chat with him apparently!

Pointless asking if bro-in-law took a photo of him :D )

Wonder if he'll be on the news tonight?

He got his award at the same time as Tim Henman.

It was on Sky news.

And here's the 'Scrubbed up photo'. Some one gave me it at work the other day. I think it's from one of the tabloids or another?

Is he trying to look like his heroes?, (& one of mine) good old Isambard K Brunel - the worlds greatest ever engineer.

By The Way, the Aveling & Porter in your picture is te one from his new TV series.
Details in new topic. (Fred Dibnah's 'Made In Britain')
